HVAC Replacement Cost Calculator

Estimate what it costs to replace your HVAC system — central AC, heat pump, furnace, or ductless mini-split. Adjust the system type, home size, and efficiency tier to see an illustrative cost range. For help diagnosing an existing system, see our HVAC troubleshooting guide.

Estimates use US customary units (square feet) and USD.

A heat pump provides both heating and cooling. Mini-splits are ductless and priced per zone.

sq ft

Approximate conditioned square footage. Used to size the equipment (ton estimate).

Higher-efficiency equipment costs more upfront but lowers ongoing energy bills.

New ductwork significantly increases cost. Toggle on if existing ducts are missing, damaged, or improperly sized.

zones

Only applies to mini-split systems. Each zone is one indoor air handler.

Adjusts the estimate by an illustrative regional factor. State-level only — not ZIP-precise.

What drives HVAC replacement cost

The biggest cost levers are system type (a furnace-only replacement is less expensive than a full central AC plus furnace), home size (larger homes need higher-capacity — more tons — equipment), efficiency tier (high-SEER or high-AFUE units cost more upfront), and ductwork (adding or replacing ducts is the single largest cost adder on this estimate).

Choosing the right system type

  • Central AC: Cooling only. Best when you already have a working furnace and just need to replace the cooling side.
  • Heat pump: Heating and cooling in one system. Highly efficient in moderate climates; often eligible for federal and state rebates in 2025–2026.
  • Furnace: Gas or electric heating only. Typically replaced separately from the AC unit on different schedules.
  • AC + furnace combo: Full system replacement. Higher upfront cost but ensures matching equipment and a fresh start on both sides.
  • Ductless mini-split: Priced per zone (indoor head unit). Ideal for additions, garages, or homes without existing ductwork. Each zone is independently controlled.

This tool vs. HVAC repair guidance

This calculator estimates replacement cost — buying and installing new equipment. If your existing system is acting up and you are not sure whether it needs repair or replacement, start with our HVAC troubleshooting guide to diagnose the issue, or see the HVAC service call cost guide for typical diagnostic and repair pricing. The two tools complement each other: troubleshoot first, then use this calculator if replacement turns out to be the right call.

Ductwork: when to replace it

Existing ductwork can often be reused if it is properly sized, sealed, and in good physical condition. Consider replacing ducts when they are more than 15–20 years old, show signs of mold or pest intrusion, are severely undersized for a new higher-capacity system, or when the home has never had central HVAC before. New ductwork typically doubles the total project cost, so it is worth getting a duct inspection before budgeting for it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace an HVAC system?

Replacement cost varies widely by system type, home size, efficiency tier, and whether ductwork needs to be replaced. A simple central AC swap costs far less than a full AC-plus-furnace replacement with new ductwork. Use the calculator above for an illustrative range, then get quotes from licensed HVAC contractors.

Should I repair or replace my HVAC system?

A common rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds 50% of the replacement cost and the unit is more than 10–15 years old, replacement often makes more financial sense. For help diagnosing and pricing a repair, see our HVAC troubleshooting guide at /hvac and the HVAC service call cost guide at /repair-costs/hvac-service-call.

What is the difference between a heat pump and central AC?

A central air conditioner cools only. A heat pump can both cool in summer and heat in winter by reversing the refrigerant cycle — making it a year-round system. Heat pumps are especially efficient in mild climates. In very cold climates, a heat pump is often paired with a supplemental electric or gas furnace.

Does this calculator give verified prices?

No. The figures are illustrative planning estimates compiled for demonstration purposes — not verified current market prices. HVAC equipment pricing changes frequently with supply chain conditions and refrigerant regulations. Always get written quotes from licensed local HVAC contractors.

Is higher-efficiency HVAC equipment worth the extra cost?

It depends on your climate, how much you run the system, and local energy prices. High-efficiency equipment has lower operating costs that can offset the higher upfront price over time, especially in extreme climates with long heating or cooling seasons. An HVAC contractor can run a payback analysis for your situation.
