Editorial Policy
Our standards for accuracy, safety, and independence.
Last updated: October 2026
How we select topics
We prioritize genuine, common homeowner questions with clear, distinct intent — the kinds of problems people actually search for. We avoid publishing near-duplicate pages or thin content created only to rank in search engines.
How we research
Guides are researched against manufacturer documentation and recognized safety and industry sources, such as the U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR, the EPA, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, where relevant. Sources are recorded with the date they were checked.
How we review technical instructions
Instructions are limited to homeowner-appropriate checks. We do not publish step-by-step guidance for hazardous work involving gas, refrigerant, high voltage, or pressurized systems. Technically sensitive drafts are marked as awaiting review until a qualified reviewer has assessed them. We do not invent author biographies or credentials.
Verification status
Each article carries an honest verification status. Where we cannot yet confirm a figure (such as a repair cost), we mark it as pending verification rather than presenting an invented number as fact.
Corrections and updates
We correct errors promptly and record a “last reviewed” date on substantive updates. Readers can report issues through our contact page.
Advertising independence
Advertising does not influence our editorial judgments. Ads are clearly labeled and are never placed inside safety warnings or in ways designed to cause accidental clicks. See our advertising disclosure for details.
